My 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II had a problem that the AF occasionally made a nasty screeching noise, although it actually focused correctly. However the noise made it unusable in many environments (e.g. any sort of social gathering). The only solution was to get Nikon UK to replace the AF SWM unit at a cost of £342 (which is about 50% of the resale cNgYR.
