The only time I've ever replaced chains was after catastrophic engine damage. Otherwise, regular maintenance should keep the chains in good shape for at least 200k, if not more.
Check for the wear first. Sometimes noises from the water pump being bad is mistaken for a timing chain needing replacement. You can always check for wear using the little measuring scale that is attached to a 13 mm bolt on top of the chain cover (I think that is where it is). Check for the exact location on this forum.
